Climate Adaptation Summit online 25 january 2021 “Action | Acceleration | Adaptation Think global, act local”
Our climate is changing. Our world is getting warmer and the impact on societies and sectors is growing. The need to adapt to these new climate extremes is driving actions: to connect challenges to solutions. To further drive and accelerate the urgent action needed, the Global Commission on Adaptation has launched its “Year of Action”, building on their report #AdaptNow and calling for transformative initiatives to be delivered at the Climate Adaptation Summit.
Supported by the Dutch Government, the “Year of Action” offers a platform for change culminating with the online Climate Adaptation Summit on January 25, 2021. The summit coincides with anchoring events held in cooperation with local partners in different places around the world. Key supporting events will be held in Groningen and Rotterdam as well as local, regional, national and international side events to advance the climate adaptation agenda.
Online Climate Adaptation Summit
The online Climate Adaptation Summit is hosted by the Netherlands on January 25, 2021. It will be a state of the art, climate neutral virtual conference, streamed worldwide over 24 hours with (online) anchoring events from cities around the world. It will build on the work of the Commission,delivering enhanced ambition, accelerated actions, and tangible
solutions to the problems of a warming world. As the world aims to rebound and emerge better equipped from the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, CAS Online will also provide a unique opportunity for leaders to promote integrated efforts to improve resilience.
The world urgently needs to enhance its ambitions and take bold action to tackle the climate emergency. Recognising this, the Netherlands government will host an online international Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS Online) on 25 January 2021, the first ever dedicated platform of global leaders aimed at firmly placing the world on a pathway to accelerated adaptation and resilience.
As the world recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic, the CAS will deliver action and inspire change to help societies build back better and act as a vanguard contribution to the transitions required for a climate resilient world. Participating leaders will launch a comprehensive Adaptation Action Agenda with clear comittments to deliver concrete new efforts and partnerships.
Over the course of 24 hours, online Anchoring Events from around the world, will support integrated efforts to secure progress towards the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Previously scheduled for October 2020, the new date and online format enables the maximum level of participation and engagement, while minimizing the impact onthe environment.
