2024 Med_net Conference and Bauhaus4Med conference and roundtable “Vulnerable landscapes - Towards green living landscapes”, 24 May 2024, Athens, Greece

IFLA Europe, Panhellenic Association of Landscape Architects - PHALA Greece and the Agricultural University of Athens - AUA, will organise a dual conference on Landscape “Vulnerable landscapes - Towards green living landscapes ” on 24 May 2024 in Athens, Greece.

IFLA Europe’s Working Group ‘Med_net’ members gather for their annual spring meeting, this time in Athens, Greece, and for its scientific conference entitled ‘Vulnerable Landscapes – towards green living landscapes’ with the 3 subthemes: a) Landscapes to be saved, b) Landscapes in balance and c) Landscape strategies and design for climate challenge. Thirteen members of the Med_net group, coming from countries all over the Mediterranean basin, will present experiences and projects from their own countries. This will be Med_net’s 5th annual meeting, following successful scientific group meetings in Lecce, Italy (2018), Tel Aviv, Israel (2019), Marseille, France (2022) and in Alicante, Spain (2023).

IFLA Europe’s Med_net Group brings together countries bordering the Mediterranean or that share its climatic and environmental characteristics, both in IFLA European Region but also from other IFLA Regions such as IFLA Africa and IFLA Middle East with representatives coming from Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon and Egypt.

Med_net was created in 2017 with the objective to raise awareness about common issues and highlight the work of landscape architects in addressing those issues with nature-based solutions. Its annual conference proceedings are metamorphosed into practical guidelines/booklets that present landscape issues in easily comprehensible terms not only to landscape architects and related professions, but also to technicians, administrators and general public. Booklets on stormwater management and trees in urban environment showcase the best landscape architecture practices from all over the Mediterranean.

As a part of the Med_net event and with the support of PHALA – Panhellenic Association of Landscape Architects and the Agricultural University of Athens, IFLA Europe will organise a conference and a roundtable of Bauhaus4Med project ‘Testing New European Bauhaus NEB Solutions for Deep Green Transformation of Cities and Regions in the Euro-MED Area’, funded by the Interreg EURO-Med programme where IFLA Europe is project partner. Bauhaus4Med project will test innovative New European Bauhaus (NEB) solutions integrating sustainability, inclusion and aesthetic aspects into decision making process for improvement of green living areas.

Bauhaus4MED aims to reshape the perception of green transformation from a necessity to a desired goal through the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative, which emphasizes sustainability, aesthetics and inclusiveness in urban green transformation. Its specific objective is to promote climate change adaptation and disaster risk prevention and resilience taking into consideration eco-system-based approaches.

This objective is in line with the objectives of IFLA Europe, its Med_net Working Group and the profession of landscape architects. The conference will represent an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about New European Bauhaus and speakers from different disciplines will exchange on how a joint approach and co-creation can contribute to green transformation and more sustainable green living areas.

The events are co-hosted by the Panhellenic Association of Landscape Architects and the Agricultural University of Athens, the Erasmus+ programme Open Landscape Academy – OLA and sponsors ‘Hunter Industries’, ‘Vestre’, ‘Gryllis Water Lilies’ and ‘Tsampasis Nurseries’.

At the same time, the Agricultural University of Athens will host two other important events:

- on Friday, 24 May, AUA is organising a MULTIPLIER EVENT of the project: Democratic Landscape Transformation: Towards an Open Landscape Academy” (OLA) funded by 2022 Erasmus+ programme OLA. Democratic Landscape Transformation: Towards an Open Landscape Academy is an Erasmus+ project that aims to open a dialogue on participation and landscape democracy within universities, researchers, practitioners and local communities involved in the public space discourse. The main objective is to promote landscape knowledge and practice through participation and to co-design different landscape adaptation strategies for climate resilience at local and regional scales. A multiplier event and a blended intensive program of the OLA project, co-organised by the Agricultural University of Athens and COMMONSPACE coop, is set to be a landmark occasion in the realm of urban landscape transformation and democracy. The event will take place from 24-31 May 2024, at the Agricultural University of Athens, and it promises to be an enlightening and enriching experience for all attendees. At least 50 postgraduate students, academics, practitioners, and activists are participating and exploring the main research question of the event: What makes an urban landscape democratic? And for Whom? The participants will have the unique opportunity to engage with leading experts in the field, exchange ideas, gain insights into emerging trends and best practices, and participate in design and prototyping, among other activities.

- on Saturday, 25 May 2024 - “Urban Heat Watch” Observatory on Urban Green and Climate Resilience”, funded by the “Green Fund” of Greece
Urban Heat Watch is a participatory research action project aiming to create a node of knowledge for urban green and climate change. The lead organisation is the Agricultural University of Athens, and the Region of Attica participates as a partner. The research includes extensive fieldwork, mapping with thermal and optical UAS (drone), exploring the Urban Ecosystem Services, questionnaires and participation processes. Innovative technologies (vehicle-mounted mini weather stations, thermal cameras, GIS, Remote Sensing, etc.) and practices are tested to map discomfort in extreme heat. The research focuses on vulnerable populations and the inequalities of different neighbourhoods to heatwaves. An annual participatory citizen science ‘Heat Mapping Campaign’ is implemented (since 2022) in the Metropolitan Athens area. Finally, a digital tool for visualising and monitoring urban greening and vulnerability at the neighbourhood scale will be developed, and the results of the heat mapping will be integrated. The project results will be interconnected with the “Climate Change Observatory” of the Region of Attica for maximum dissemination and exploitation.
