International conference Smart landscapes 2: Sustainable and Renewable, 26 April 2024, Zagreb, Croatia

The Croatian Associations of Landscape Architects invites you to the International Conference “Smart landscapes 2: Renewable and Sustainable”. The conference will be held on April 26, 2024. at the Liszt Institute, Augusta Cesarca 10 in Zagreb, starting at 9:00 a.m.

The partners of this conference are the Hungarian Cultural Center in Zagreb - the Liszt Institute and the Hungarian Association of Landscape Architects.

About the conference:
Can AI (artificial intelligence) generate a sustainable landscape? What are energy landscapes and what is the role of landscape architects in their creation? What are the new techniques in urban environments to mitigate climate change and do you know how they do it in the Schönbrunn Gardens? What are the new landscape architecture projects in the Netherlands?

In order to join the world trends, with this conference we celebrate April - the World Month of Landscape Architecture, and 26.4., the World Day of Renewable Energy Sources. The celebration of the month of landscape architecture began in 2006, when the International Federation of Landscape Architects - IFLA (International Federation of Landscape Architects) declared the month of April as the world month of landscape architecture. The World Day of Renewable Energy Sources is celebrated every year on April 26, the day of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that occurred in 1986, with the aim of raising awareness of the need for research and application of renewable energy sources - wind, sun, water, biomass, geothermal sources.

The conference is open to the general public, and from the professional community to landscape architects, architects, surveyors, builders, sociologists, urban planners, economists, biologists, foresters, bankers and all participants who participate directly or indirectly in planning, designing and maintaining landscapes and urban environments. Renowned lecturers from Hungary, Austria, Sweden, Rwanda, England, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro will speak at the conference. From Great Britain comes Mr. Nigel Thorne, renowned landscape architect, employed as Project Manager at Harley Street Area Partnership Business Improvement District in London. Mr. Thorne will talk about “smart landscapes” and examine new technological solutions and their development in landscape architecture. Gergely Hankó from Hungary will hold a lecture on “Green industry opportunities in green-blue infrastructure development”. Another guest from Hungary, the vice-president of the Hungarian Association of Landscape Architects, Dr. Fekete Albert, will hold a lecture entitled: “Community cooperation in the protection and restoration of local landscape values - Vernacular spa revitalization”. The lecture entitled “Shaping energy landscape: sustainability of low carbon technologies in the transition of the energy sector” will be held by our guest Senka Ritz, from the Strategy and Development Department of Hrvatska elektroprivreda. Renowned professor Martin van der Toorn is coming from the Netherlands, who will present contemporary landscape architecture projects in the Netherlands. From the University of Rwanda, professor Celestin Ukozehasi, who will hold a lecture on the topic: “Restoration of landscape connectivity-the policy instruments”. Dr. Tadej Bevk will come from the University of Ljubljana and give a lecture entitled “Energy landscapes across scales: planning, design, and assessment”. Landscape architect from Sweden, Róbert Schuck, will answer the question: “Can we generate sustainable landscape with AI?”. From Austria and Vienna’s HBLFA Schönbrunn, Thomas Roth is visiting us with a lecture: “The sponge city system for Urban Trees - concept, techniques and built examples - A nature based system for climate mitigation in city heat islands”.

In addition to the mentioned lecturers, other renowned guests will speak at the conference, so come and listen to this international conference!

And at the end, we invite you to relax with a lecture and a piano concert on the topic: “Music and Landscapes”. The lecture and concert will be held by Dr. Inja Stanović, a pianist from Great Britain.
