IUCN launches the IUCN Global Standard for Nature based Solutions!
IUCN Global Standard for Nature based Solutions is the culmination of a 2 year long process, involving 600 experts, practitioners and policy makers from over 100 countries, and now thelaunch and roll out of the Standard.
What are Nature-based Solutions?
At the 2016 World Conservation Congress and members’ assembly, IUCN’s members adopted a resolution (WCC-2016-Res-069) which, for the first time, defined the use of nature for simultaneous benefits to biodiversity and human well-being. According to the resolution, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are “actions to protect, sustainably manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits” (more information can be found

23 July 2020 IUCN will kick off the series of NbS events in the run up to Congress in January, with the launch of the Standard and a global call for action. In what is shaping up to be two high-level events with global representation, IUCN will be welcoming leaders, champions of NbS across regions and sectors to establish a joint vision as well as commitments for turning NbS into action, through the Standard.
The new Standard aims to help governments, NGOs and business design, invest and scale-up action to address climate change as well as other related crises such as human health, food and water security, reversing land degradation and biodiversity loss and reducing risks from climate and disaster events. It is the first-ever tool that will help design robust, durable actions for deriving benefits for people and nature.
