The Landscape Architecture education in Switzerland celebrates its 50th anniversary!

The year 2021 will mark 50 years of education in Landscape Architecture in Switzerland. Taking precedence over its European neighbors, Switzerland established the first courses in the early 1970s, in Geneva and then in Rapperswil. HEPIA and the OST - University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland, the only HES providing this education in Switzerland, have chosen to join forces to celebrate this jubilee.

La Haute école du paysage, d’ingénierie et d’architecture HEPIA - HES-SO Genève and Haute école d’ingénierie de Rapperswil (OST - Haute école spécialisée de la Suisse orientale) mark this anniversary!

At the interface between man and the natural systems concerned, landscape architecture contributes to building a quality living environment for our fellow citizens. The 300 students currently enrolled in Bachelor education programme in Switzerland, compared to the few registered at the beginning, show the increased importance in connection with the societal and environmental issues of the moment.

The first highlight will take place in Geneva with the exhibition “The Universe of Walter Brugger, Landscape Architect (1924-2002)” whose heritage is central to landscape architecture in Switzerland.

Walter Brugger was the first landscape architect to open an independent office in Switzerland at the start of the 1960s. During his fifty years of professional activity, from the Lake Geneva coast to Zurich, and in several German cities including Munich, he worked closely with 1000 projects, a large part of which in Geneva, where its imprint is still clearly visible today.

In 1971, Walter Brugger initiated the creation of the Landscape Architecture course within the Horticultural School, where he himself was educated from 1941 to 1944.
