Biography

Prof. Dr. Şükran Şahin graduated from Ankara University, Faculty of Agriculture, Department of Landscape Architecture in 1986. She worked for a short time in an architectural office. Since 1987, she has been a member of the academic staff of the department from which she received her degree. Dr. Şahin graduated from Ankara University, Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Landscape Architecture in 1989 with a Master’s degree (Thesis Subject: Problems of Ankara Urban Street Trees and Necessary Measures to be Taken in Terms of Landscape Architecture) in 1989 and Ph.D. (Thesis Title: A Research on the Identification and Evaluation of the Landscape Potential of Dikmen Valley) in 1996. During his doctoral studies, she participated for one year (1992-1993) in the Certificate Programme in Rural Planning in Relation with Environment of CHIEAM IAMZ in Zaragoza, Spain, and then studied for five months in the Economics of Natural Resources at the University of Bologna, Italy. Her main areas of interest are landscape ecology, landscape planning, landscape characterization, landscape analysis and assessment of river corridors, environmental impact assessment, especially ecological impact assessment.

Dr. Şahin has worked as a researcher in an EU FP7 project (2007-2010) and as a senior national stakeholder in a World Bank project (2009-2012) on landscape degradation. She has worked as a lecturer and executive assistant in the projects; Efficient Use of Computers for Office Management, GIS, CAD/CAM Applications; (1993) and European Masters Degree Course on Environmental Management (1994-1997) supported by the European Union MED-CAMPUS program and conducted at Ankara University. She also worked as a lecturer on environmental management tools in the European Masters Degree in Eco-Integrated Mechanical Engineering projects supported by the EU TEMPUS program and carried out at the Technical Universities of Gdansk and Szczecin in Poland (1995-1997). Dr. Şahin has worked as a project manager in three projects supported by Ankara University Research Fund on Tourism Potential, Effects of Green Areas on Climate and Phenological Observation in Urban Parks. In the field of landscape analysis and assessment of river corridors, in which she gained expertise through her Ph.D., she has conducted studies on Ankara Dikmen Stream, Imrahor Stream, Zir Stream, and Kızılırmak River crossings in the cities of Sivas and Kırşehir.

Dr. Şahin was involved in the BTC Crude Oil Pipeline Project between 2003 and 2007 as a third-party environmental monitor within the framework of the project’s EIA reports. She was involved in reviewing the method statements of the restoration plan for ecological concerns. She also monitored and advised the project contractor's ongoing ecological restoration activities on-site for compliance with project standards and the EIA method statement.

She worked as a coordinator in a project supported by the TÜBİTAK KAMAG 1007 program, and as a result of this project involving three Ministries; National Technical Guide for Landscape Character Analysis and

Assessment at Regional and Subregional Scale(2014) was published. As a result of another research in which she took part as a project coordinator too, the work titled Technical Guide for Landscape Restoration and Rehabilitation in Stream Corridors" (2014) was published by the relevant Ministry. Apart from the aforementioned, she has also taken part in many other researches as a researcher or consultant.

Dr. Şahin, who has taken part in many national and international academic events as an organizer and/or participant, has many works in this context. Dr. Şahin took part in the establishment of Ankara University Latin American Studies Centre (2009) and served as the Deputy Director of the same unit for a while. Between 2007-2009 and 2010-2012, he served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Ankara University Faculty of Agriculture. Between 01 December 2016 and July 2017, he served as the Vice Dean of Ankara University Faculty of Agriculture.

Dr. Şahin is one of the founders of TAPLAK Planning and Design Programmes Accreditation Association (2019) and is currently a member of the 2nd Term Board of Directors. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Landscape Architects for the 15th term and Turkey Delegate to the European Region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects since 2017. She is a member of the Mediterranean Working Group (Med-Net) of the same organization. She has also been a member of the Ankara Geopark Scientific Committee since 2021.

Dr. Şahin is fluent in English and Spanish.
