Rural landscape in São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal

The rural landscapes of the São Miguel Island in the Azores archipelago (Portugal) are composed of natural and cultural elements, combined in a harmonious manner, balanced in terms of the relationship between unity and diversity. A specific characteristic that gives the site its own identity consists in the association between livestock and forest landscapes. Thus, although large areas of the island are used for grazing and agriculture, biodiversity is still high and includes a number of endemic plant species.
The food security of local communities is ensured through traditional and modern agricultural activities, which contribute to the development of the local economy in a sustainable manner, mainly with a low impact on the environment and the landscape.
