2017 / of walls and emptiness_dystopia of light hebron / A – Ideas

My analystic work “Of Walls and Emptiness” tackles the question on how walls can create voids and spaces of emptiness in an urban fabric. How does a wall affect space and how does emptiness develop over time? The theoretical analysis is followed by a case study of the Westbank, analysing its divided spatial structures, the wall and border logic and finally its impact on urban space and the different actors in Hebron, one of the biggest towns in the Westbank. Analyzing firstly the different wall situation, the spaces of emptiness and their interactions resulting in their impact on the daily lifes of the different actors. The thesis is concluded with a provocative light scenario, the “dystopia of light”, which illuminates Hebron and its empty spaces by huge mirror structures on its mountain tops.
