LANCASTER IS ‘GROWING’!
Most of the cities are affected by the industrialization, growth and expansion of population, leaving behind a trail of derelict spaces, same is the story for the Canal Corridor, Lancaster (United Kingdom)
‘Lancaster is Growing!’ is a part of a larger 3- part brief starting with (1) Survey, Analysis (2) Urban Design Framework and finally (3) Detailed Site Design (prototype) of a 150x120m chosen area from the site.
The project is primarily a regeneration project with primary objectives/ focus to interpret and regenerate the dispersed heritage with the significant redevelopment of the public realm and therefore maximise the potential of the site. The brief also lists down requirements for accommodation options for various identified user groups and that the growth of the city should be sustainable.
With my regeneration proposal, ‘LANCASTER IS GROWING!’, I seek to define a new era of healthy living, financial and environmental self- sustainability and resilient urban development on the site through linking the blues and greens and blending affordable housing for the homeless and retired with urban farming.
This process will result in a new green heart for the city. A new image of the inner city to be forged by giving a new meaning to old buildings, the canal and addition of various dynamic landscapes.
Therefore, the proposal seeks to address some of the main upcoming concepts in an urban setting, like urban agriculture, participatory and circular economy, soft mobility, community engagement & sustainability.
